Un/mediales Reales. Über militärische Simulation und Traum
Abstract
When focusing on realistic computer graphic representations of current and future the researcher often cannot help noticing an unreal, dream-like quality, especially concerning source material from U.S. contexts. This form of calls attention to itself. Examples range from battlefield concepts as ‚total virtual reality, online computer shooter games of the U.S. Army, neural control of weapon systems by bomber pilots or to psychotherapy with immersive war-scenarios. How does the digital medium allow for the staging of so-called virtuality and reality? Looking at examples such as the DARPA project Advanved Biomedical Technology and the Visible Human Project a demonstration of a rigorous defense of sleep in a (capitalist) dream can be analyzed, promising protection of encounters with the Real (Lacan). It's about using "ein kleinwenig Realität" (Lacan) to explore the un/medial border of military simulation and dream from within this dream.
