Geometrie als Schreibmedium bei Paul Valéry
Abstract
The article examines the influence of the non-euclidical geometry and Analysis situs of the 19th century on the Cahiers of Paul Valery (1871–1946). Two aspects are prominently taken into account: On the one hand the paradigmatic character of geometry and its formalised procedures of representation and arguing, which Valery will draw on as an ideal instrument of thought, and as a universal medium of writing and designing. Valery attempts to implement the mathematical model into his own writing practice, since it allows for formalised thinking as well effectful and influential form Cahiers, Valéry admits that he has not established a mathematical regime of writing, but has rather submitted to a technology of the self, according to which writing demands the eternal continuation of writing only.
