Abstract
In this paper, I address my own position as a postmigrant woman in the university and academic context by expanding my analysis to include not only a discursive self-reflexivity but also gaze regimes of different actors. With reference to Rey Chow’s reflections in the essay "Film as Ethnography; or: Translation Between Cultures in the Postcolonial World," I explore questions of cultural identity, originality, and authenticity by extending the method of autoethnography with Benjamin’s thoughts on "The Task of the Translator." Using Chow’s theories, I outline alternative, more fluid and transparent ways of cultural translation that go beyond reductive concepts of East and West, original and translation, fidelity and betrayal.
