Large Language Models: Machine Learning as Facilitating Reading and Writing

Authors :

Abstract

Large language models (LLMs) can be conceived of as tools or as agents. If they are understood as the former, their current use initially lies in the facilitation of reading – for example through summarizing or pre-structuring texts. Only in a secondary step is their function as a means of facilitating the writing process relevant. As tools for relieving the writer from the textual-absolute, they primarily appear relevant for texts that are written without jouissance. A look at the production of literary writing also shows them in their creative function, in which a shift from the role of tool to that of agent can already be glimpsed.
