Abstract
In a close reading of Roland Barthes′ diverse articels on photographic images showing situations of grievance, lament and shock Didi-Huberman asks «with and against Barthes» how these images can be looked at, how the depicted suffering can be turned into an experience of the image beyond pathos and stereotypes.
