Männer, Mädchen, Mädels. Gegenderte Berufsrollen in der analogen Radioproduktion

Authors :

Abstract

After the Second World War, many young men and women were trained in audio engineering in order to work at the German Public Service Broadcasting. Although both men and women were called »Tontechniker/in« (audio engineer), their training consisted of different curriculums: Men were offered an extra semester of education as well as higher positions in the radio stations. While working in the studio, usually women were to operate the tape machine, while men were to control the mixing console. The situation that I will explore in detail in this paper relates to a central and recurring mechanism within radio production: All those who are involved in radio production employ technical gear, and who is granted access to which gear in order to perform certain tasks is subject to negotiation on different Levels.
