Abstract
The special issue is dedicated to play, which the contributions discuss as a political practice with speculative dimensions as well as a potentially violent relationship of power. It becomes clear that alternative futures become imaginable in play, both on the level of individual games and with regard to research in various fields and to social development. At the same time, contributions address the common misunderstanding of play as a nonserious, harmless, and pleasurable activity in analyses of specific power relations and playful fascisms. The introduction to the special issue situates these contributions in the field of game studies and its history.
