Performing the Archive. On Listening as Situated Praxis, Improvisation and Artistic Research in the Context of Working with Sound Archives
Abstract
In his project Cosmoaudiciones: The Sonic Diaspora (2022), artist Miguel Buenrostro explores ways of approaching the sound archive of the Berlin Phonogramm Archiv. Through a critical listening positionality, the rhythms and musical worlds of the recordings such as their migrations, affinities and absences become the starting point for a border thinking: In the improvisations with musicians, the recordings reveal themselves as places of knowledge production and encounter. By listening to these borderlands of the archive, the musical worlds can be (re)embodied through their performance.
