Reines Warten und im Kino bleiben. Maintenances von Momenten von Demokratie
Reines Warten und im Kino bleiben. Maintenances von Momenten von Demokratie
Abstract
Situated at the intersection of film/cinema theory and political theory, this essay constellates, under the sign of maintenance (German: Wartung), the creation of purity by cleaning with waiting (German: Warten) as staying, maintaining. Both kinds of maintenance take place at the cinema. The essay questions cinema in regards to its cleanliness/purity by twisting a politically charged aesthetic purism and opposing current (art-field) discourses that bid farewell to cinema as a form/practice that is no more. «Purified» cinema, however, i.e., the multiplex theater where cleaning (just not yet) takes place while the credits of superhero movies roll, assembles maintenance people: those who clean the room and those who stay in it to wait for credit cookies. This sharing/dividing of time is read as instances of maintenance of a protodemocratic experience that is lost, but not yet washed away.
